SET 3: IMPORTANT WORDS, THEIR MEANINGS AND SYNONYMS FOR CAT

A good grasp on vocabulary is essential for high scores in CAT examination. The different sections of CAT verbal are quite impossible to crack without the sound knowledge of vocabulary.  Be it reading comprehension or sentence correction, the candidate is going face difficulty in solving the questions without having a good grip on difficult words. So here are some words which will help you build your vocabulary. Also please try and find Antonyms for the same:

ABROGATE: To abolish or render void

Synonyms: annul, nullify, rescind, void

CHICANERY: Trickery, deception

Synonyms: duplicity, craft, stratagem, wile, subterfuge.

DEPLORE: To express sorrow or grief over

Synonyms: lament, decry, grieve

EXTRANEOUS: Not essential; foreign; irrelevant

Synonyms: extrinsic, adventitious. Antonyms: germane, intrinsic, inherent, relevant, pertinent.

FLAGRANT: Outstandingly bad

Synonyms:  glaring, scandalous, notorious, conspicuous, gross

MUNDANE: Of, or pertaining to, the world, as contrasted with the spirit

Synonyms: earthly, terrestrial, secular, temporal

NOVICE: A beginner

Synonyms: tyro, neophyte

PREROGATIVE: A privilege or power attaching to a position

Synonym: license

SOVEREIGN: Supreme power and authority; independent of the control of any other government

Synonyms: autonomous, imperial, majestic, paramount

VITUPERATE: To scold or blame loudly, find fault with in abusive language

Synonyms: berate, revile
