CAT 2016: Expert Analysis by IIM Graduates

The Common Entrance Test (CAT) has been conducted on December 4, 2016 by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. This national level test is conducted for admissions to management programme of IIMs and other Top B-schools. The test was held in two slots in one day. he first session of CAT 2016 was conducted from 9 AM to 12 noon. There were no major surprises in the exam pattern. The total number of questions in each section and the difficulty level of each of the section was similar to the one seen in 2015. The first slot was conducted in a mostly glitch- free manner. However, there were a few issues of students being logged out of the system, which was resolved quickly by the invigilators present there. There was no report of any time loss for the students.

The CAT paper comprised of three sections –

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Quantitative Ability (QA).

The LRDI section comprised of 32 sections, whereas QA and VARC section had 34 question each. Each section had a sectional limit of 60 questions. However, the LR and DI questions within the LRDI was not sub categorised. A brief summary of CAT 2016 Slot 1 is given below:

CAT Analysis 2016 Slot 2

In terms of section wise difficulty, Quantitative Ability (QA) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR) sections were on the tougher side. In comparison to these two sections, Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) was of easier difficulty level. The CAT 2016 exam pattern of the test was also same as previous slot.
